Mets disable Castillo, designate Matthews

06/04/2010 - Flushing, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The New York Mets have placed second baseman Luis Castillo on the disabled list, retroactive to June 2, with a bruised right heel.

Castillo underwent an MRI Thursday which was negative. He apparently suffered the injury in Tuesday's game in San Diego when he hopped on one foot before limping off the field after scoring in the first inning. In the seventh inning, he beat out an infield hit that appeared to have caused more pain.

In 44 games this season, he is batting .241 with 14 runs batted in and seven stolen bases.

The Mets also designated outfielder Gary Matthews, Jr. for assignment. He was hitting .190 with one RBI in limited playing time, 58 at-bats, this season.

To fill the two roster spots, New York recalled infielder Ruben Tejada from Triple-A Buffalo and catcher Omir Santos from Double-A Binghamton.

Tejada was batting .294 with one home run and 11 RBI in the minor leagues. He opened the season in the major leagues and had one hit in six at-bats before being sent down.

Santos started the season at Buffalo and hit only .194 with two RBI before being optioned to Binghamton, where has just two hits in 27 at-bats with three RBI.
